CIP Processes in the Food & Beverage Industry

What CIP is

Clean-in-Place (CIP) is an essential hygiene and sanitation process used throughout the food and beverage industry to clean process equipment, tanks, vessels, pipework, valves and associated production systems without the need for dismantling or manual disassembly.

What it removes

CIP systems are designed to efficiently remove product residues, fats, proteins, oils, scale and other contaminants from internal process surfaces, while ensuring that equipment is hygienically prepared for the next production cycle.

A typical CIP cycle

Depending on the type of product, process requirements and level of contamination, a typical CIP cycle may consist of several controlled stages, including:

Pre-rinse

Removal of loose product residues using water.

Caustic cleaning

Circulation of an alkaline cleaning solution to remove organic residues such as fats, oils and proteins.

Intermediate rinse

Removal of residual cleaning chemicals and loosened contaminants.

Acid cleaning

Circulation of an acid solution to remove mineral deposits, scale and inorganic residues.

Final rinse

Thorough rinsing with fresh water to remove remaining chemical residues.

Sanitisation

Where required, a sanitising solution or hot-water treatment is applied to achieve the required hygienic conditions before production.

Controlled circulation

CIP solutions are typically circulated through the system at controlled flow rates, temperatures, chemical concentrations and contact times to ensure effective cleaning performance.

Recovery and reuse

To improve efficiency and reduce water and chemical consumption, CIP solutions can be recovered, monitored and reused where appropriate. Dedicated CIP tanks are therefore used to collect, store and recirculate cleaning solutions for subsequent cleaning cycles.

The result

A correctly designed CIP system provides consistent and repeatable cleaning performance, improves plant hygiene, reduces manual intervention and downtime, and supports the stringent sanitation requirements of modern food and beverage manufacturing facilities.
